The Public Works Department is responsible for fleet maintenance, street and alley maintenance, sanitation services, traffic control, upkeep of City buildings and grounds, and Cedarwood Cemetery.

The department has 35 full time employees dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructures and appearances of Roanoke Rapids.

Fleet Maintenance

Fleet maintenance provides preventive and repair maintenance to 250 pieces of rolling stock. The division is staffed with 2 mechanics and the Garage Superintendent.

Sanitation Collection Policy PDF Print E-mail

BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Roanoke Rapids that the following policies apply to the collection and disposal of sanitation items including but not limited to yard waste, junk, leaves, white and brown goods, refuse:

I. Once A Week Sanitation Collection

It is the intent of the Public Works Department to collect all sanitation items on the same day that your rollout is collected. The City charges a residential solid waste fee of $188.59 per residential unit per year. The components of this fee are: rollout cart collection and disposal, yard waste collection, junk collection, leaf collection, white and brown goods collection, refuse disposal and tub grinding. This fee is set by City Council and may change annually.
