Application for Appointment to City Council, District 1 Vacancy
Deadline is Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.
Roanoke Rapids, NC – The City of Roanoke Rapids is accepting applications from qualified residents within City Council District 1 to fill the remainder of the unexpired term vacated by resignation from former Councilmember Tommy Daughtry. All completed applications must be submitted and received by City Clerk Traci Storey before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2023. The Roanoke Rapids City Council will proceed with consideration of filling the vacancy during its regularly scheduled meeting on October 3, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. and expects all eligible applicants to attend and appear before the board.

All applications received by the City Clerk will be verified to ensure residential qualifications for appointment utilizing data available from the Halifax County Tax Administration and Board of Elections.
The current vacancy leaves a four-member board and increases the role of the Mayor in breaking ties, as allowed. Vacancies on City Council should be filled as soon as reasonably possible to provide citizens with the benefit of deliberation and action by the full complement of five (5) councilmembers called for in The City Charter.
About the Roanoke Rapids City Council. The Mayor and City Council are the governing body of the City of Roanoke Rapids. The Mayor is elected at-large by all qualified voters citywide. The city is divided into three electoral districts for the purpose of electing members of the council. The Council is composed of five members, two representatives from Districts 1 and 2 and one representative from District 3. All members serve staggered terms of four years. The City’s municipal elections are conducted on a nonpartisan basis.
The Roanoke Rapids City Council meets the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Lloyd Andrews City Meeting Hall located at 700 Jackson Street, unless otherwise noted.
